Summary: "That's it, Cy. That's where I'm going when I'm gone, to be watching you from above. My star"
"But Si, I thought you were going to live forever."
"Who knows how long forever will last?"
Cypress Black remembers her brother moments after she finds out he is dead.
That's all she felt for a moment. A slicing pain that tore through her heart and her soul as if it was a sharp knife and she was butter.
"Sirius," she gasped, clutching her chest.
There was only one time she had felt pain like this, twenty-two years ago...
Cypress bolted upright and grabbed her pillow, pressing it against her face. She let out a piercing scream.
The pain was too much to bear. She got out of bed and hurried downstairs just in time to see...
"That's it!" Sirius yelled, grabbing Remus' hand. "You can't accept me for what I am, then I won't stay here anymore." He stormed towards the door, turning to their parents. "I'm leaving. Forever."
"No." The word came out as a whisper. "No!"
This time it was a scream, and Cypress shot forward. She wrapped her arms around her brother's waist.
"Don't go, please, please, please don't go," she whispered. She knew she was crying, for the first time in more than five years, but she didn't care. "I need you here, Si. Don't leave, please, please."
"Sorry, Cy. I wish I could take you with me." And then, with a gentle kiss on the forehead and a whispered promise of "Someday..." her brother was gone.
Cypress collapsed and gave into the tears.
The phone rang, interrupting Cypress' memories. She picked it up and mumbled, "Hello?"
It was Remus, and he sounded upset.
"Cypress, I have bad news."
She closed her eyes and tried to fight off the feeling settling in. She couldn't. "Sirius."
"What is it?"
"I can't think of an easy way to say this."
"What's wrong with my brother, Remus Joshua Lupin?" she interupted, a bubble of hysteria building. "What happened?"
"Sirius is dead, Cypress."
She was stunned silent.
"Don't call me that," she said, the feeling building. "Only my brother is allowed to call me that. And he's not dead, Lupin. He's just missing. I'm telling you he's alive, Lupin. Oh, Goddess. Sirius. Oh my Goddess." She collapsed, trying to not sob. She didn't even notice when Remus hung up the phone as another memory came.
"That's it, Cy. That's where I'm going when I'm gone, to be watching you from above. My star."
Sirius pointed at the star, yawning slightly. It was just past midnight, and the siblings were streched out on the roof of Remus' house.
"But Si, I thought you were going to live forever," Cypress teased, grinning at her brother.
"Who knows how long forever will last?" His face was serious. "I'm not jokin, Cy. I love you, sis, and when I'm gone, I want you to know I'll be watching you, like I have the past two years."
Had it only been two years? Two years since she ran away and the Potters took her in? Two years since she had fallen in love with Marissa? Two years. A lot can happen in two years.
"I love you too, Si. It's okay. I know," she whispered, hugging him.
"I guess forever is shorter than we thought," she whispered. Then she gave herself over to tears.
