Summary: "You think the dead we loved ever truly leave us?" - Dumbledore
Sirius opened his eyes to stare into darkness. He was suspended in the air like a puppet with no strings. It was as if he was in a void; a place where no sound, no light, and no life exist. He felt no air but noticed his clothes ripple around him and his hair was flowing up like he was floating down an endless shaft of water. He tried to give out a startled cry as he felt his body begin to move down as he gained more conscienceness. When his feet touched the floor his clothes and hair became still. He looked around the darkness desperate for a sign of where he was... faintly wondering who he was for a second. He must have spun around five times before he noticed a sliver of light in the distance. He began to walk slowly to it; almost as if he was tiptoeing. He was soon in front of the sliver of light and extended his hand to try to make more light. His hand his cloth and he grasped it and pulled back. It was a veil... he knew of the last veil he saw and he became excited. He was going to be free. He was going to see Harry. He now extended his other hand and took a hold of the other part of the veil and pushed both sides open at the same time. He stood astounded at what he saw.
He stepped out form behind the curtain into a circular room. He saw five four-poster beds, trunks, pets, and books. He looked around to see if anybody was there. Out of the corner of his eye he saw a boy sitting on the edge of his bed. He was holding something with shaking hands. Sirius tried to step forward to see what it was, but he found he was being restrained by some force. Where was he and who was this boy. He snapped out of his thoughts as he heard the boy say his name.
“Sirius Black!” the boy said again.
Sirius tried to respond but no words came out of his mouth. He tried to step forward again and found that he was now able to move. He walked over to the front of the boy
and saw it was Harry. His heart tightened; of coarse it was Harry. Sirius looked to Harry's side and noticed the brown paper on the bed. He looked back at the thing in Harry's hands and recognized it as the mirror he had given Harry. His heart tightened more as he realized Harry just now remembered the present. He jumped in surprise when he heard a small shatter in Harry's trunk. He peered over and saw his mirror with the glass cracked in the corner. He heard soft muffled cries and looked up to see Harry crying. He moved forward to hug Harry in comfort but felt his arm go right through the boy. He stood back up in horror. He looked at his arm and noticed it looked solid to him. He tried to call out Harry's name. Harry just stood up and left the room. Sirius followed Harry to the door calling his name over and over.
"He can't hear you, Sirius..."
Sirius whirled around at the voice ready to attack whoever it was. Standing in front of him was Harry... no... it wasn't Harry.
"J.. j.. James..?" Sirius choked out, "How... where... why... you're here!"
James stood looking at Sirius; his face solemn. He new only too well what Sirius must feel like. Wanted to reach out and touch Harry and to talk to him... just see him again. But James knew that would never happen for both of them anymore. He tried to fight back the tears that were threatening to poor down his eyes as he saw his friends devastated look. He knew he should comfort Sirius, but he didn't know how. Did Sirius even know the truth about himself?
"Sirius... you're... you're dead..." James said as he looked down at the floor. He didn't want to see his best friends face in that moment.
"I can't be dead! I just can't. I have to see Harry again... to tell him everything is all right. To be there for him. I'm the only person he has left, James! Or are you even
James... is this a dream. I can't be dead. Harry needs me! ... and I need Harry."
James stepped forward and embraced his weeping best friend. He didn't know what to say or what to do. He had been in this position before, but he had Lily to help him. He let Sirius go and took hold of his shoulders... he called out Sirius's name and made sure Sirius was looking him in the eyes.
"Sirius... I know how you feel. For 11 years I watched Harry grow up... knowing that I would never be able to talk to him, touch him, or hold him again. Knowing that when he needed his dad like all kids do... I couldn't go to him. It killed me Sirius. The one thing I wanted more than happiness for myself was to be able to be there for Harry. I watched all the times Harry got ridiculed... and I couldn't be there to make the person stop. I saw him in the times he cried himself to sleep... I couldn't be there to hug him and tell him everything is all right. Then in his 3rd year I saw hope. I saw his hope in having a father. Lupin was teaching at Hogwarts... little did I know that you would be showing up. My best friend... his Godfather. When I saw you I knew everything would be alright and you would help Harry through hard times- which you did. But it still killed me knowing that it wasn't me to do it. Things weren't easy for Lily either. She saw how her sisters family was treating Harry and she went insane. She wanted to go there and tell Petunia to straighten up her act. But she couldn't. We had to stand back and watch Harry have a horrible life. Thankfully he has made two great friends. Like you and I had two great friends... we had hope that you would take Harry in and make him happy... but Sirius... it won't happen now..."
Sirius looked James in the eyes and saw how hurt his friend was... it made him realize that he wasn't the only one in pain. He stopped crying at once and hugged James tightly.
"I'm going to take you back to the year you met Harry... and show you something that might make you feel better. It's what has made me feel better on countless occasions. Harry's knowledge in this matter helps him go on... and he will need it to help him even more now that you are gone."
Sirius felt cold wind sweep over his body and the room became a blur and just a sudden as that happened they were in another room. This one was filled with portraits and tables filled with many silver objects. Sirius jerked his head to the center of the office when he heard voices speak. He saw Dumbledore talking to Harry. He felt James loop arms with him and start to walk forward. Sirius walked forward with James and they were soon close enough to hear exactly what Dumbledore was saying.
"You think the dead we loved ever truly leave us? You think that we don't recall them more clearly than ever in times of great trouble? Your father is alive in you, Harry, and shows himself most plainly when you have need of him. How else could you produce that particular Patronus? Prongs rode again last night."
Sirius looked up into James' face and saw his friend smiling. James turned to look at him and nodded. At that exact moment the wind swept over his body again but this time they ended up back in Harry's dormitory. All the boys were asleep and a sliver of moonlight shone in from the window and splashed across Harry's face... illuminating his scar.
Sirius stepped forward and started to walk to Harry's bed... he looked over at James and noticed James just nodded his head... he realized James knew exactly what he was going to do and turned his head back around and reached Harry's bed. He bent down and listened to Harry breath in and out for a few moments before he spoke.
"I'll never leave you Harry. I'll be here for you forever. You got a new guardian angel tonight. I love you and whenever you need help just call out my name and I'll be there... protecting you in spirit."
Sirius straightened up and turned around to see James, and to his surprise, Lily standing in front of the veil with tears in there eyes. James stepped forward and took Sirius's hand. Sirius breathed deeply and clasped James' hand back. Lily turned around and walked back through the veil. Together James and Sirius walked towards the veil. Right before the stepped through Sirius stopped and turned around for one last look at Harry... his heart clenching and tears flowing down his cheek. James squeezed his hand and he turned around as he heard Harry whimper his name in his sleep. James tugged Sirius forward and they walked through the veil. It snapped shut and disappeared right as they stepped through.
Harry woke suddenly right as the veil disappeared. In his dream he had just seen Sirius... he recalled Sirius's words and knew it wasn't a dream. Sirius had just been there... but he was gone. But Harry knew that Sirius will always be watching over him. He smiled and went back to sleep- more content than he had been before.
